Parent questions
The questions parents ask most, answered by Coach Joshua. For questions about lessons, booking and cost, see the FAQ.
- What age should my kid start baseball lessons?
When a player can stay focused for a 45-minute session and wants to get better, usually somewhere around 7 to 9.
- USA, USSSA or BBCOR: which bat does my kid need?
It depends on the league, not the player. Check the stamp your league requires before you buy.
- How many pitches is too many? Pitch counts and rest days by age
Pitch Smart sets a daily maximum by age and the rest days required after each outing. The tables are below.
- Should my kid play baseball year-round?
Play other sports and take real time off from throwing. Use the offseason to get stronger and fix the swing.
- How do I choose a hitting or pitching coach?
Look for a coach who measures where the player starts, explains the why, and gives a plan for between sessions.
- What do bat speed and exit velocity actually tell you?
Bat speed is how fast the barrel moves; exit velocity is how hard the ball comes off it. Together they show whether the swing is working.
- How should my kid get ready for baseball tryouts?
Start six to eight weeks out: build the arm up gradually, take game-speed reps, and know what coaches are watching.
